The conspiracy theory behind Medium email marketing.

When you publish something on Twitter and LinkedIn, they don’t allow you to send emails to your followers. But, In the case of Medium, they do. So, what actually the reason behind it? Why does Medium allow you to collect and send Emails to readers?

I’ll show you why.

Let’s deep dive into it:

Some General Data About Medium

Medium is a social web blogging platform.

FYI, there are more than 130+ million monthly visits on Medium, and the total number of readers is 70 million-ish on the platform. (including dead, suspended, and inactive accounts.)

Monthly visits on Medium

But the sad reality is that there are only 5 million+ downloads of the Medium app, which is less than 10% of the total monthly visits to Medium website. And this is the worst thing about Medium.

Total downloads of Medium app

The Only Reason Medium allows You To Collect And Send Emails To Your Readers

So, what’s the option Medium left with?

Email? Yes.

As we talked about the above data, having less than 10% downloads in their app makes it difficult to get enough visits on the platform. Thus, it’s very har to grow the company.

More visits = more money.

The major drawback of the Medium website is that it doesn't notify you when your followed author publishes something new. There is no bell icon.

On top of that,

On average, less than 2% of your total audience sees your post when you publish something new (without email). But, when you send the email to your readers it can increase by 4% to 8%.

Because, when you send an email to your readers, the email directly goes to their inbox. They read it through inbox, and when they find value in your content they come to the website by clicking the option “views story” from the email.
That’s where they clap and comment on your post. And this is how Medium gets traffic from emails.

Although, its existing audience of Medium. But it gives the traffic to the platform and views to the author.

Now here is the money part. We can understand it with this short sequence:

Website visits >Trust>Membership Buying>Medium Money ($$)

This is the reason they allow you to collect and send emails to your readers.

My Experiment With Medium Email Marketing

Now, Let me tell you about my experiment with it.

I’ve more than 140+ email subscribers on my Medium account. (Total 350+ = Gumroad + Medium)

But I only send emails to my Medium subscribers.

Let’s come to the point:

A few days back I did an experience to see what possibly can happen if I don’t send emails to my readers. And the results were pretty shocking.

Let me start with the basics:

As of now, I’ve more than 2,500 followers on Medium, and when I publish and send emails to the readers of my new post, I get an average of 250 views on my posts.

But, when I did the experiment with it. I was stunned.

Look at the blow image where you’ll see the top two posts have 53, and 37 views, because I didn’t send the email to my readers when I published it. As the result, My post views decreased almost from 250 views to less than 55 views. means, decreased by 500% (ish) under 24 hours.

See these top two post’s stats:

Shocked?

To confirm this experiment, after 40 hours I sent emails to my all email subscribers of that same post, and shockingly my views increased almost by 400% on that post.

Note: I deleted the “Welcome To Monday Mediumpreneur” post due to some reasons.

And, this is why when you are about to publish something, the check mark of the “email option is selected by default.

How To Collect Maximum Emails

Want to get more emails from your readers?

In order to get more emails, you’ll have to give a good call to action to your readers by showing them the benefits. ( benefits, not features)

I often test out with my email copy.

Places where you can give the call to action of your email list:

  • Bottom of every post you write.
  • Your Medium profile bio.
  • About page.

Final Touch

No doubt, emails are so powerful.

Once you build some decent subscribers on your email list, you can monetize your list and convert them into $$$. Thus, I highly recommend you collect emails as much as you can.

I hope this helps.
