What To Write? Maybe This!
The most common question
Finding a topic to write about can be pretty daunting.
You don’t know whether you should choose a niche or assume that “You’re the niche” (as gurus tell you.) And it’s one of those questions or problems (call it whatever) that has no right answer.
But I can spark a bulb in your mind by giving you some insights or ways to help you find your niche or make you realize what you should write about — in this noisy world!
Sounds good, my friend? Let’s dive in!
Approach #1: Be A Guide, Not A Guru
Sounds cliche, but works so well.
The internet is full of “How-to’s” information. How to do X. How to do Y. How to Z. XYZ... For example: How to start loving your cat. How to get your first consulting client. Even better: How to get so many girls as an ugly guy!
Lol.
The problem with this approach is that the person who’s writing or teaching the stuff might not have done the work itself (who knows?) and that’s why it’s so easy to write “How to” headlines. Anonymous?
Anyone can do this!
And that’s why you should screw this approach and come up with something better — a better which I call the “How I did” approach.
When you write “How I did” in your headline, you actually have done the work and know that you have the experience and knowledge of doing the work and you can write from your own experience and knowledge.
This approach completely stands you out from the crowd because of your unique opinions, thoughts, and ideas about the topic you’re writing about.
The only problem is you can’t write “How I did X” if you haven’t done the work — unless you’re fishing people for your advantage.
But I think it is the best approach you can follow to write stories or content on the internet. Let me give you an example of how I do this in my writing.
Some of my most viral stories are the ones that have “How I did X” in the headline. And by far, I found this the best way to teach people or write stories on Medium or on the internet.
Approach #2: Write For Yourself
The best writers are the ones who write for themselves.
Let’s be honest: you can’t write about the topic, you don’t like. So let’s say want to build an audience around the crypto niche — just because it’s so trendy and monetizable.
But what you don’t realize is if you don’t like crypto, you won’t be able to build an audience — let alone monetize it. Of course, you can hire writers, etc but at the end of the day, what’s the point, you know.
And, this is why it’s a wrong approach to say “Write for your audience” You don’t need to write for any audience. First what you need to understand is — you’re your audience. You are your first reader.
So my approach is: write for yourself and the people who are interested in the topic you’re writing about — will find you and become your audience.
Does that make sense?
I wouldn’t be writing about “Medium Growth Writing” to this point if I hadn’t enjoyed writing about this topic. I love teaching people about Medium and its ins and outs, and that’s why it’s been close to two years I never felt burned out talking about this subject.
Because when I teach people how to do things on “Medium” I don’t just teach my audience but also it helps me grow as a writer on Medium.
Just because I teach my audience, I precisely remember, I understand the concept better, and my thoughts about the topic become sharpened.
Isn’t it beautiful? This should be your goal.
But the question you may ask: But I don’t know what should I write as “Write for yourself.”
Well, here’s a straight answer to that question.
The Write For Yourself concept can be the topic you want to:
- Educate yourself on
- Love to read content on
- Build a business around
If you can combine these three, you have a goldmine!
All you should keep in mind is that make sure you’re actually curious about the subject and you want to educate yourself about the topic and the rest will fall into place (like making money) as you learn things along the way.
Nothing makes you happier than doing and writing about what you love and building a business around it — while having full control over everything.
