5 Uncommon Things I Do To Go Viral On Medium (Steal This)
This is how I go viral on Medium
Going viral on Medium isn’t that hard.
Up to this point, I’ve gone viral 78 times. Not to mention, I only have written 210 stories, and 78 went viral. That’s a solid 37.14% hit rate. How impressive is that?
I know it may sound unbelievable hearing those numbers, especially when all you get are “Crickets” on your own Medium stories.
Well, I can prove to you that everything I’m saying is true and I hold proof. Want me to show you some proof so you can trust my words?
Here you go:
Enough? Just send me an email if you want more proof.
So how do I do it? Glad you asked.
Now let me show you how I trick Medium algorithm to help me go viral.
Let’s dive in!
1. The Rule Of One
I don’t believe in writing about various topics on Medium.
If you write about multiple topics you’ll have so many disadvantages that can cost you so much more than you think they would.
The Rule Of One is basically writing about one topic. Writing for one audience. So when you write about only one topic you not only become an authority in the niche, but also your followers trust and buy from you.
Truth be told…
You can’t write about 10 different topics and expect to go viral multiple times a week or month writing on Medium. It’s just not going to happen.
However, you might go viral here and there sometimes, but you won’t have the hit rate of 37% or anything near that.
It took me a year to understand this concept but when I DID understand it everything changed for me.
The last week especially? I went viral 3 times with just 7 Medium stories. Can you imagine that?
Trust me. I’m telling you, if you want to go viral consistently you should be writing only about one niche.
Period.
2. Niche Followers
I don’t believe in “Non-Targeted followers.”
It’s far better to have 1,000 niche followers than 10,000 no-niche followers. Getting non-targeted followers is like collecting crap — Zero value. Simple.
Let me ask you: Ever wonder why so many writers with 50k or 100k followers barely get any engagement on their stories? This is the reason.
They’ve got these “Non-Targeted followers” who don’t want to read about 10 different topics from the writer. So the stories’ engagement drops. It’s a fact that you can’t deny.
But this only happens when you write about multiple topics.
Niche followers, on the other hand, help you go viral on Medium. Whenever you write a new story, your readers click on the headline, they read the story, and they take action. (claps and comments)
The reason they do it? Because you write about one niche and your readers care about the topic you write about. And this is the reason you’re reading this story. This is how it works, my friend.
So what does it do?
When your initial followers engage with your story, it indicates to the algorithm that the story that you’ve written is actually good because people are engaging with it.
So the algorithm says “Let’s push this story to more people.” So you go viral.
See this picture from my Medium MasterClass (A glimpse):
This is how you trick the algorithm. Write in one niche, and build niche followers.
The 50% job is done.
3. Audience Relationship
Your audience is everything.
If you fail to maintain a healthy relationship with your audience you won’t go viral. Period.
To go viral, you must build trust and relationships with your followers. As I said, based on the initial reaction of your followers to your story the Medium algorithm decides whether your story should go viral or not.
I teach the Medium Algorithm on Medium MasterClass. For now, let me just show you another PPT so you can understand it and become unstoppable in going viral.
Here it is:
Truth bomb: You don’t need a huge audience to go viral on Medium.
Think this way: The Medium algorithm has so many boxes and in each box, there are a number of people in ascending order.
So when you write a new story — the story goes through these boxes one by one.
It’s a deep analogy. I’ll teach you another day.
4. Write Killer Medium Stories
Crappy content gets crickets.
If all you write is crap then no one can help you go viral on Medium. Doesn’t matter whether you have niche followers or you’re writing in one niche.
Crap = Trash.
In order for your stories to go viral they have to be good. You can’t expect thousands of views writing crap.
So how do you write a killer story? Here you go:
- Headline: The headline is the first thing a reader sees before they read the story. Meaning? Your headline has be to worth clicking or attention-grabbing. If you can’t write great headlines you have no eyeballs. Simple.
- Hook: Hook is where you grab the reader’s attention when they first start writing your story. These hooks can be one sentence or a few paragraphs. Ask a question, tell a story, or state a point to hook the reader.
- Format: Your story has to be well formatted for the readability perspective. If you lack in formatting, your story will lack in getting you the eyeballs you want. Use bullet points, main points, and bold italic to format your stories.
- Promise: And lastly, never clickbait. Always deliver on the promise you make. This builds trust and a great relationship with the readers. They believe you. They trust. If you fail to deliver on the promise, on the other hand, it kills all the trust.

5. Keep The Momentum Going
Volume wins.
So many writers think that if they publish too many stories they’d bore the reader. How come?
You’re absolutely wrong.
Understand. Writing online is a game. More so it’s a volume game. The more shots you take, the more chances of your winning will be.
So in order for you to go viral and write great Medium stories you’ve to put in the reps. You’ve to publish a lot. I mean a lot.
You can’t just write 2 stories a week and expect to go viral twice a week. It’s not going to happen.
But what if you publish 7 stories a week? You might go viral twice a week. Because you’ll have a higher chance of going viral.
Now, of course, your stories have to be good to go viral. And to write good stories you’ve to put in a lot of effort. Just like I did with this story.
So what do you understand? You need both.
You need volume and quality. And it’s only possible if you put a lot of effort into writing the story. FYI, sometimes I take 7 hours just to write one Medium story, while other takes just 2 hours to finish the story.
It depends on what type of story I write. So these are the 5 things I do to go viral on Medium. Want more? I got you.
