Well, why you should listen to me in the first place?

Great question. If you don’t know, I’ve been writing on this platform for quite a while now. As I’m writing this story, I’ve got 5,900+ followers and generated over $2,000 without the Medium Partner Program.

I’m fortunate for what I’ve done writing on Medium🙏.

So if you’ve been writing on this platform for a while or are looking to start writing on Medium in 2024, here are 6 useful tips for you from my side:

1. Don’t Start

Seriously!

If you’re just trying to make money through your Medium writing — and if the money is your primary motivation to start writing on Medium.

Please don’t start on Medium.

Because if money is your motivation to keep writing on Medium — you won’t last long. You can’t do it for months let alone years. So what’s the point of writing if you can’t continue it for at least 5 years?

Instead, do something else.

You’re better off doing something you love. Find your interest. Maybe you love creating videos. Maybe you love hopping on calls with friends online. Maybe you love playing guitar.

If you notice those subtle things they signal that you can also build a business around those things and make money.

Write on Medium only if the primary motivator isn’t money.

2. Specific Knowledge

Do you know what’s the funny thing about writing on Medium?

Most people either write about self-improvement or life. In other words, they follow what everyone is doing and just try to copy it, which is wrong, in my opinion.

If you’re thinking you can make money or build a business writing ANYTHING you want and by copying others — No. You’re wrong.

Specific knowledge, on the other hand, comes from finding your genuine curiosity and exploring your interests. Specific knowledge can’t be copied. It can’t be trained on. You must find it and learn.

So write about topics you care about or you have a genuine interest in. Because if you’ve chosen the topic just because it’s easy, everyone writes it, or trendy, my dear friend, you’re no longer writing on this platform — soon.

Write what you love to read.

3. No Such Things As “Rules”

Literally, zero.

If you write enough you’ll realize that none of those “Writing advice” matters. Because they’re not mandatory. Different people have different approaches to their writing.

Every possible writing rule you can think of — can be broken. If I want to write like this I’d do it. If. I. Want. To. Write. Like. This. I’d. Do. It.

You get it.

I think there are only good and bad works. The type of work that decides your progress. And as said, there is some good writing advice too like writing short paragraphs or using simple words.

You first learn the rules so you can thrive, then you become a master at what you do and you break the rules when needed.

4. Don’t Network Mindlessly

Networking is selfish.

Networking is nothing but just a tradeoff. No one wants to network with you because they have something that they want to give you. But the truth is they want to network with you because they want something from you.

As Naval said: Business networking is waste of time.

So instead of commenting, dming, and networking mindlessly, you’re better off writing & publishing quality stories that prove your competence.

And this way, people who are the same as you are and have similar goals, and thought progress — will reach out to you and want to connect with you.

That’s true networking.

Commenting on someone else story isn’t networking. Sending networking dms isn’t networking. True networking comes naturally.

5. Monetize As Soon As possible

It’s good if you’ve joined the Medium Partner Program.

But you shouldn’t wait for the next 500 or 1,000 followers milestone to monetize your audience. Monetize it from day one or as soon as possible.

Don’t wait for any milestone.

The easiest way you can monetize your small audience (100–300 followers) through is consulting. Offer one-on-one coaching and charge a small amount of money.

The beauty of consulting is it doesn’t ask you for a huge audience.

But keep in mind, the money you make is the byproduct of your work. And to make money from what you do, you must enjoy what you do.

That’s the recipe.

6. Invest In Yourself Without Thinking Twice

The best investment isn’t the S&P 500, it’s the S&Me 500.

The best investment is self-investment. The more you invest in yourself the more you learn and grow as a writer — the only way to make more progress in less time.

When you invest your money into someone else product, book, course, coaching, or consulting, you get access to their knowledge and wisdom in just a matter of time, which have taken them years to learn and acquire.

Pretty time saver, right?

Although I’m not saying you should spend a fortune buying courses or products. Certainly not. Because most of them don’t help you get the results you want to achieve.

But you can definitely invest in the BOOKS you like that can help you achieve the outcome you want. Reason? Books are so affordable.

As you’re a Medium writer, you should find offers and products that just cost a few bucks but can help you get the results you want. Something like this ebook that just costs a few bucks but helps you get results.

I think if someone is teaching you what they know by just asking for a few bucks, you shouldn’t second guess it. But instead, grab it without thinking twice. Why? They can teach you the things that took them years to learn in just a few hours or days.

No-brainer!
