October Medium Partner Program Update: What’s Happening?
This is what you need to know
To be honest, I don’t know how to start this story…
Since once again, I have got some sad (if not bad) news for writers eager to join the Medium Partner Program.
As you might know Medium had promised to launch its Partner Program by the end of 2023 in 60 more countries including India, Brazil, and Thailand.
But guess what? They failed to deliver on that promise.
Let me get straight to the point and talk about what just happened.
Yesterday, a member of the Medium team posted a story stating that the launch of the Medium Partner Program is being delayed further.
They continue by saying that they can’t make any more false promises to their users any further. However, they are still working on bringing the MPP to 60 more countries — “They said”
They estimate the launch in these 60 countries to occur by early 2024.
You can read the story here that Buster Benson has written. And here’s the part where he talked about the Medium Partner Program update.
“We continue to work on bringing more countries into the Partner Program. And while we initially estimated this would only take a couple months in total, we’ve gotten further into the work, and see that this will unfortunately take longer than we estimated. As of now, we estimate that the additional country support will launch in early 2024 with a more robust payout system to handle all the nuances of different countries and currencies. However, we’ve learned our lesson about promising dates and we don’t want to make any firm promises here other than that we are planning it and working on it. We know how excited people are in the countries that are not yet supported, and we are working hard to offer this as soon as we can.”
I don’t know if I should call it bad or good news, as they intend to launch the MPP, but they also keep delaying it.
Not to mention, “early 2024” means from January 2024 to March 2024. That implies we’ll have to wait another 3 to 5 months or maybe even longer.
Who knows?
Because they are also uncertain about whether they’ll be able to introduce the MPP within this timeframe.
Hold on!
I wonder, if Twitter can launch its Partner Program in India and Brazil, why can’t Medium? In case you don’t know, Twitter (now X) recently rolled out its Partner Program in India and many other countries.
So, if that’s the case, what’s the problem with Medium? Both platforms have partnered with Stripe for payment methods, yet Medium seems to say, “Keep writing without making money, losers.”
I don’t know what’s happening.
Sometimes I feel like it’s not about Partnership but something else. However, I don’t have a precise understanding of what’s going on, but I do think something is fishy.
Because if Twitter can do it, why can’t Medium?
This leads to the best lesson: Don’t expect anything from Medium. Don’t wait for the Medium Partner Program to launch in your country. Instead, try to monetize your writing in other ways.
