Medium has changed a lot!

But regardless of how many chances, I believe Medium is still the best writing platform out there — and as a writer, your first priority should be to build an audience on Medium.

Trust me, it’s all worth it.

But since Medium has changed a lot, and its algorithm isn’t as it used to be — you need to work smart, not hard.

To grow and write on Medium, you have to do things that most people aren’t doing — that’s what separates you from the crowd.

So the tips I’m going to share with you have personally worked for me, and I can confirm they will work for you as well.

Let’s dive in:

Rule 1: The Rule Of One

You can’t write about multiple things and expect to grow.

When you’re starting out on Medium, I’d not suggest you write about 10 different topics. This won’t help you grow. If you really want to grow on Medium, you have to follow the rule of one.

Now what I mean by this is you have to write only about “One and one topic” for an extended period of time until you get enough followers.

When you write about one topic, you become an authority on it. Your small audience knows you about the niche you write. And it becomes easy for you to stand out.

This “Niche” topic is a whole big idea. We can debate this topic for hours, and the end won’t come. So let’s stop here and do what I just said.

Don’t listen to what your Medium guru says about it.

Rule 2: Build Your Brand

You can’t scam people here.

You can’t be anonymous and expect exponential growth. You just CAN’T. So what you have to do is — you have to show your brand. Your name. Your picture. Who you are, etc.

This is how you attract your ideal reader.

If you really want your reader to trust and care about you and your writing — optimize your profile. Put your name, profile picture, and about you in your account.

Enough talk — let’s come to the next point.

Rule 3: Make Content The King

Nothing is going to work without good content.

Let me be extremely clear about it: You aren’t gonna get any followers if your content is not good. The content is what drives people to follow you and read more stuff from you.

But if you’re a writer who creates poor content that shows no value to the reader, then no one is going to follow you — not even bots.

So to grow, you have to write good content. There is no alternative to this.

Rule 4: Maintain Consistency

Consistency is the key to success.

You can’t expect to have a huge audience in just 30 days of writing. You may go viral sometimes, but it won’t bring you 10,000 followers overnight. Building an audience is a long game. And you have to play it long.

So have patience and maintain consistency.

It also depends on how well you do your job here — if you can understand the platform better and try to understand the type of audience that exists here, then you may grow faster than usual.

So work smart, not hard.

Rule 5: Try Things Out And Ship Fast

You have to try things out.

If one headline doesn’t perform, try the other variation. But you shouldn’t stop testing it. If one writing format doesn’t work for you, try another format.

I never published articles in publications — it is just not for me.

But maybe you’ll like it. So try publishing on publications too. In the beginning, it can give you eyeballs, and that’s how you can build your initial followers.

And last, ship fast, meaning write regularly. Try publishing 4–5 articles per week. You need volume in the beginning.

Most people get this wrong. They think that in the beginning, they should publish less, and as they grow, they should publish more. Wrong. The opposite is true.

In the beginning, volume is the key.
