Here’s Why You’re Not Making Money From Your Medium Writing
The Truth Behind It
I know, you know, everyone knows — Money is the biggest motivation.
Isn’t it?
Well, the good news is you’re not alone. The fact is that 99% Medium writers aren’t making money from their writing, even if they join the Medium partner program. But you can join the list of 1% writers, you’re only one step away to make money from your writing.
So, What are the reasons that stop you to make money from your writing?
Here they are —
Reason First
The very first thing, you’re not making money because of your niche.
Yes, you heard it correctly — Niche.
Unwillingly you try to write about different topics and try to grab all the domains, instead of focusing on one targeted niche. We live in the era of the attention economy, where people's attention span is less than 8 sec. And in this attention economy those wins, who conquer their domain and become the king of their domain.
See these Examples, what happens when you write beyond the domain.
This happened.
And this happens when you try to capture all the domains.
Julie Rane — one of the famous writers on Medium, has over 55k followers and got claps of less than 100 in these posts.
Mark my words. Write in a niche.
Reason first Emerge Reason Two
The Niche impacts your audience, and I called it “Audience differentiation”
When you write in a variety of niches, you‘re doing nothing more than the “Audience differentiation”
Audience differentiation is a term, in which your audience will be interested/non-interested in a variety of topics.
When you hit publish something, some people will read some won’t.
Reason Two Emerges Reason Three
This comes to Reason three.
The value.
When you write in a different niche, you will lack value, The psychology behind it is that You lack values because you want to grasp all the domains at a time, thus causing you low expertise in the niche.
A reader follows you because he/she wants value from you. They want their answer, they want solutions to their problems. A true reader never follows a person who doesn’t solve their problems or doesn’t provide them the value.
Don’t forget! Everything is going step by step.
Let’s come to the next.
Reason Three Emerges Reason Four
And when you lack value, there will be no views.
Why?
Because nobody wants to read your content, your content is not solving their problems or not answering their questions.
Also, they don’t care how much time you’ve spent on research, or how much time you’ve spent on writing the piece of content. All they want — The Values.
And you have to provide them. If you can’t, let’s come to the next.
Reason Four Emerges Reason Five
No Views. No Money.
If you don't get views on your content, you can’t monetize. I know your ultimate goal is to make money from your writing, but if you don’t get views, Medium is not going to pay you anything, even not a penny, as well as your audience.
Simples as that.
Conversely, if you get good views, you will make good money from the Medium partner program as well as from your audience by monetizing them in the form of ebooks, courses, consulting, community, and so on.
So What Next?
Talk in your domain.
Not too broad, not too narrow.
Let me clear this up because when I say focal niche, some “World-class writers” think In the wrong way.
The niche should be focal, which covers all the subdomains.
What do I mean by this?
- If you are writing about Marketing — Talk about all the aspects of marketing. (It's Works on Medium)
- If you’re writing about writing — Talk about all the aspects of writing
- if you’re writing about Cryptocurrency — Talk about all the aspects of cryptocurrency.
You can niche down further (if you want.)
What Do People Actually Do?
They write about self-improvement, diet, finance, cryptocurrency, and all you can imagine.
This is the reason, nothing else. And this is why they are not making money. If you want to make money avoid these mistakes and emerge as the king of your domain. So that people can remember your name when they talk about a particular domain.
Think about — Stephen King, J.K Rowling, James Patterson, and so on.
They were, and are the king of their domain.
Focal Niche > Targeted Audience > More Values > More Views > More Money.
Period.
