Create The Content You Want To Consume
The Reason Your Stories Don’t Get Read
“Your audience interest.” What? I mean, really?
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the idea of “Know your audience,” “Create for your audience,” or “Understand your audience.” Okay, I get it. You should understand your audience. But the bigger and better question is, “Do you really understand yourself?”
If the answer is NO, then why try to change the world if you can’t even change yourself? As a writer, this goes back to writing the content you want to consume. Are you really creating the content you want to consume? If not, you need to change something.
So many, and I mean so many writers and creators just write about the stuff so they can either make some money or please their audience, which is completely fine at some level. But at scale, it doesn’t scale. At some point, you have to realize that what you’re doing is absolutely wrong.
You don’t even want to read the content you write. Then what’s the point of creating it? That’s a serious question, if you ask me.
Now I’m not pointing out any specific writers here, but I’ve seen and I see this every now and then, that they create content that they’d never read if you asked them to read it. They’re just creating for the sake of creating it.
I believe it’s wrong.
Create For Yourself
Instead, create the content you want to consume.
This is what I believe. If you really want to learn about something, well, that’s a good way to create content on that topic because you can learn it, and also people who love the topic will become your audience. This is one way to do it.
The second way of doing this is to have an interest in a particular topic or subject that you can’t stop thinking or talking about. This can absolutely be a game changer for you to write passionately.
Because you don’t get bored writing about the topic, you don’t run out of ideas, because you enjoy the subject or topic. And this is what you really need to find. Find what interests you.
Forget about your audience, forget about your fans. First, be your own audience. Be your own fan.
So create for yourself, and the people who are also interested in the topic will join you. That should be your goal. And that should be your approach towards creating content.
Create the content you want to consume.
Will you do this?
