What does it take to build an audience online?

Let’s be honest, I’m not special. I’ve got close to 6,000 followers and made a couple of thousand dollars through it. But to be honest, I’m just a normal person like most people. I have no unique talent or expertise.

So this is a reminder for you if you’re consistently judging your abilities and inner power or comparing yourself to someone else. Don’t do that.

No matter who you are — you can build an audience on Medium. Busy mom, college student, full-time 9–5er, retired person, or unemployed — doesn’t really matter — you can build an audience on Medium in 2024.

But then you may say: Building an audience isn’t for everyone.

Yes, at some point it’s true. But let’s just frame it and say something like this: Yes, it’s not for everyone but anyone can build an audience in 2024.

Does that make sense? It’s not for everyone, but anyone can build an audience writing on Medium in 2024.

Let’s elaborate on this.

Why it’s not for everyone? Because not every person on the internet gets the idea of “Building an audience” What’s more, most people can’t make it happen because of their lack of consistency, motivation, or whatever.

And this is why it’s not everyone.

So why anyone can build an audience on Medium? Because there is no barrier to entry. There is no certification requirement. But, it’s only possible if you maintain consistency and keep publishing stories.

Because, certainly, it’s not easy to build any audience. If it were easy, everyone would have 1000s of followers on Medium, do they?

Then the next question arises: So do I need to be an expert to build an audience on Medium? And the answer is — certainly you don’t need to.

Here’s the premise:

You don’t need to be an expert on the topic you want to build an audience around. Instead, what you really have to do is to just know enough about the topic so you can teach people who are one step below you.

Your college professor certainly doesn’t know all the things about his subject. But to teach the students and you, he just needs to prepare the chapter he’s about to teach for the next morning's class.

And this is what they do. And this is what you need to do too.

So here’s the actionable step: Find the topic you care about just soak in all the information about that subject and then start writing stories about it.

You’ll realize that the people who also want to learn or educate themselves about that topic — will find you and follow you for your work. And this is how you build an audience.

There is one best example I can give you.

The Cultural Tutor. You may or may not know this guy but he’s built an audience of 1.6M followers on Twitter/X just exploring his curiosity.

Have a look:

He just talks about the things he finds interesting. His topics vary from art, history, geography, and architecture to culture, homes, buildings, and aesthetics of the world.

Is he an expert? Certainly not.

So many people know better and a lot more about history & culture than he does, but can’t build an audience because it’s about doing the right thing at the right time.

But this guy? This guy gets the idea of “Building an audience.”

And what’s funny is though, that guy? The Cultural Tutor, Sheehan, was working at Macdonld in 2022. Can you imagine that? And he now has this massive audience and making money from it — writing on the Internet!

Isn’t it beautiful?

Anyone can build an audience, even you!
