One wrong keyword, and you’re fucked!

Seriously. I see a lot of writers make this one mistake (that I’m about to show you) on Medium. If you don’t know what actually a “Keyword” is…

Let me explain.

A keyword is a word, that helps Medium understand what’s written in the story or what’s the topic about. The keyword is how Medium’s algorithm understands the language of writing/story.

Your headline has keywords. Your body copy has keywords. However, there are main keywords and there are general keywords. Here, I’m talking about the main keywords.

Say, I’m writing a story about “Medium stories” So instead of saying stories if I say blog post — the whole perspective would go wrong and the algorithm will show the story to a different audience.

For example, the headlines are:

10 Writing Tips You Can Use On Your Blog Post

In this headline, the algorithm will show the story to people who might be interested in blog post writing, not in Medium story writing.

Now here’s another headline:

10 Writing Tips You Can Use On Your Medium Story

In this story, the Medium algorithm will show the story to the people who might be interested in Medium story writing, not in blog post writing.

Understand. Blog posts and Medium stories, both are completely different keywords. We don’t call a Medium story a blog post or content. We call them stories.

Same. It’s a blog post if it’s written on a website (except Medium) and we can’t call them stories, they’re blog posts or articles.

Do you understand?

So if I’m talking about a Medium story, I can’t add keywords like blog posts or articles anywhere in the story. The only main keyword should be “Story.”

But what’s funny is though, it took me a year to understand this. I used to make this mistake, especially with keywords like story, blog post, content, article, etc.

Now you’ll never find me saying blog post, article, or content if I’m talking about “Story.” It’s a Medium story and I’ll call it a story.

And this is a mistake that you might be making but you aren’t recognizing it. If so, fix it as soon as possible. Be careful of what keywords you’re using in your headline and your body copy.

For instance, If you go back and read the headline of this story, you’ll find that the headline is extremely clear and specific. The only people who are going to click on this story if they write on Medium.

It’s not for content writers, it’s not for freelance writers, it’s not for writers on Twitter or Linkedin. It’s for Medium writers. Medium writers.

The right keyword with the right targeting.

One wrong keyword doesn’t just confuse the algorithm, but also the reader.
