5 Things You Should Do If You Want To Grow Exponentially On Medium
This is how I do it
Do you feel like you’re not growing on Medium as you should be?
You publish your stories just to get crickets on them. You try to engage with fellow creators but barely get any engagement. You try to figure things out but find it hard. And you wish that someone give you a “Magic Box” so you can proudly say to your friends and family “Yes, I’m a writer on Medium.”
If this is you, I’ve got good news for you. I’ll show you (yes, you!) how you can achieve the results you want and grow exponentially on Medium. (Something just like I did?)
Now here’s a caveat though, I know my approaches wouldn’t align with the way you write. And I know that you’ll find them “Ridiculous” to follow.
But my friend, just listen to me for a second. If you follow what I’ll show you — will 100% help you get the results you want. Because they are proven to work. Trust me!
So let’s dive in!
#1: Write In One Niche
Here’s the mistake you’re making.
Now this isn’t just you. People who want to start writing on Medium or want to build an audience —most of them try to write about 5–10 topics(in some cases, even more) to grow on Medium.
And this is the reason you’re not growing.
You’re writing about many topics and because of that, you’re gathering scattered followers. This directly causes you what I call “Audience differentiation.”
This is why your stories engagements are low and your growth is stuck.
I won’t go deeper into it since it’s a gigantic topic that I teach in Medium Masterclass. But what I can tell you here is, don’t write about multiple topics.
The Medium algorithm and the people’s reading psychology don’t work that way. So what you should be doing then? Great question.
Write in one niche. Write for one audience. Yes, that’s what you’ve to do. If you really — really want to get massive engagement on your stories and grow exponentially on Medium — this is what you have to do.
Ever wonder why some writers with a huge audience barely get any engagement on their stories? This is the reason. They write about multiple topics. So engagement? Nada.
#2: Build Your Ecosystem
Let me break your wrong beliefs about growing on Medium.
You think that to go viral, you need a “Huge” audience. You think that it’s hard to go viral if you have 500 or 1000 followers.
Nope. You’re wrong.
You can 100% go viral and grow exponentially on Medium with just 300 or 800 followers. You don’t need a huge audience.
But how? By building your ecosystem. As we already talked about you should write in one niche to get targeted followers.
Now that “Niche-followers.” will help you go viral on Medium. Viral? Exponential growth.
Here’s the thing…
The algorithm doesn’t favor the writer whose story covers multiple topics. The algorithm isn’t designed that way. The algorithm looks for your expertise and authority.
And you do it by writing in one niche.
So what’s your ecosystem? “Niche followers.” By doing it, you get more headline clicks, more reads, and more followers.
Now let me ask you a question: Will you read my stuff if I suddenly start talking about cryptocurrency and Bitcoin? Of course, you won’t.
Why? You follow me because of the relevancy I have with you.
Do you understand?
#3: Write Top Notch Stories
This is where most people suck.
Another reason you’re not growing is because you might be creating crappy content. The stories you write aren’t good enough. Simple.
Let’s face it: You can’t grow writing crap on Medium. Why? No one likes to read crap. When you write crap, you not only waste the reader’s time, you also waste your time as well.
So you must create and write great stories.
And how do you do it?
- Headline: The headline makes or breaks your story. Tell me, would you have clicked on this story if I had written the headline “Go viral” or something “unworthy” to click? You probably didn’t. Lesson? You must know how to write killer headlines.
- Killer Hook: Your story should instantly grab the reader’s attention once the reader clicks on the headline. You can ask a question, tell a story, or state a point to grab the reader’s attention.
- Great Intro: At the start of the story or in the first few paragraphs you should emphasize “What’s the topic about” and “Who’s the story for” This instantly makes your story compelling and relatable.
- Formatting: Have you tried using bullet points, main points, and sub-headlines? Nope? You should immediately start using it. People skim the story before they read it. So your story must be skimable. How do you do it? Formatting.
- Short Paragraphs: Always write short paragraphs. People don’t like reading long paragraphs. Reason? It bores the reader and they feel lost when they see a giant paragraph. You should avoid it at all costs.
- Tell Anecdot Stories: Your stories or experience is what makes the story unique. Whatever topic you write about — just throw your stories in it. This will make your writing more authentic and compelling.

#4: Double The Winners
Now here things get interesting!
You write a story. It gets 10000 views. Thousands of claps. 100s new followers. But what next? This is where you get stuck.
Let me tell you what you should do next.
When something works, pay attention. If a story goes viral — analyze the story. Try to understand what made the story go viral. And think about how you can double down on the story.
Ask these questions to double down on the winner stories:
- What made the story go viral?
- What does the headline promise?
- What’s the intro or hook of the story?
- Is the story inspirational, motivational, or educational?
- How can I write similar stories without annoying the reader?
Do you see? This is how you make more progress!
#5: Build Trust With Readers
Now this is all the gravy that you need.
You can’t expect to go viral or grow fast on Medium without your existing followers' help. Let me explain what I mean by that.
So assume, you’re one of my followers. But you don’t like me or my work. You follow me just because you want to see what I’m doing (jealousy?). You don’t clap, you don’t open or read my stories. Nothing. You’re kinda Zombie.
Don’t forget, I have 5,000+ followers. So imagine if I have 100s of like you who don’t like me or like my work. How can I grow and get views in this case? Impossible, right?
This is why you should build a true relationship with the readers. And how do you do it? By providing valuable content over and over again.
You should understand the power of your existing followers. Even if you’ve 100 or 400 followers — build a healthy relationship with them. Help them solve their problems. Reply to their comments etc.
It’s about human-to-human connection.
