This is how I get followers

This was by far the best month for me on Medium.

This was the month when I finally hit 4-digit followers in a single month. However, I have so many months when I hit 3-digit followers but had zero 4 digits until this month.

So I made it.

Getting a thousand followers is like a dream come true. But I also know how hard it is to get 1,000 followers in a month.

And to be honest, getting thousands of followers doesn’t happen all the time. I had so many months when I only got 200–300 followers.

But somehow I believe I’m getting closer to getting more followers while doing everything differently.

So here’s how I got 1,000 followers in 30 days (October):

1. A Beautiful Home

Your profile is your home.

When someone reads any of your stories, if they like the story they check your profile. So if they also like the profile — they follow you.

What does that mean?

This means you’re inviting the reader saying “Hey come visit my home and if you like it please stay there. I’ll make the food (Your stories) for you and serve you too as long as you’re in the home.”

Does that make sense?

So what if your home isn’t good enough? What if your home is a full mess? The reader rejects your invitation and finds another home to live in. How? Scrolling the timeline.

I hope this metaphor makes sense.

So how do you make your home beautiful?

Here are the 5 things you’ve to do:

  • Profile Picture: Put your own photo in the profile right away. Why? To build trust and increase the follower's conversation rate. However, you can be completely anonymous and still manage to get followers but you’ll have unlimited disadvantages if you do so.
  • Bio: Your bio should show two things. 1: Who you are. 2: What you do or what you can do for the reader. These 2 things must be added to your bio. Want one more? Give a call to action.
  • Banner Post: Don’t keep your banner post blank. Add something there. Add a banner post that supports your brand or message. This instantly makes you a trustworthy person.
  • About Page: You can expand and tell about your journey in the About section. This section is where your readers or new followers go to learn and know more about you.

2. Compelling Medium Stories

Medium stories don't work, compelling Medium stories do.

If you only write Medium stories then you’re doing it all wrong. You have to write compelling Medium stories. Because the reader reads compelling Medium stories, not Medium stories. Remember.

Now let me show you how you write a compelling Medium story:

  • Killer Hook: Your story should instantly grab the reader’s attention once the reader clicks on the headline. You can ask a question, tell a story, or state a point to grab the reader’s attention.
  • Great Intro: At the start of the story or in the first few paragraphs you should emphasize “What’s the topic about” and “Who’s the story for” This instantly makes your story compelling and relatable.
  • Formatting: Have you tried using bullet points, main points, and sub-headlines? Nope? You should immediately start using it. People skim the story before they read it. So your story must be skimable. How do you do it? Formatting.
  • Short Paragraphs: Always write short paragraphs. People don’t like reading long paragraphs. Reason? It bores the reader and they feel lost when they see a giant paragraph. You should avoid it at all costs.
  • Tell Anecdot Stories: Your stories or experience is what makes the story unique. Whatever topic you write about — just throw your stories in it. This will make your writing more authentic and compelling.

These are the important elements you should be implementing to get more followers and views.

3. Solving Problems Practically

Don’t give advice, tell them how to do the thing practically.

Therioical stories don’t work. If you want your stories to be read by people and to get followers — your stories must be practical.

When I say practical I mean you should give practical tips, ways, methods, and lessons, that they can instantly apply and solve the problem they have.

Try doing it and if doesn’t work I’ll do what you tell me to do. I promise.

4. Writing Great Headlines

Let me ask you a question.

Would you have clicked on the headline of this story if I had written the headline “1,000 followers in one month.” probably no.

However, it still shows the benefit of 1000 followers in one month, but it lacks a lot of important elements.

So if the reader sees this headline they would question: Is this story about tips, how to, lessons, and ways, or something else? So the reader gets confused, which you absolutely don’t want. Would you?

So you must understand what makes a headline a great headline.

I consider adding these 8 elements (some alternative) to a headline:

Medium MasterClass slide

The first 3 are compulsory in every headline you write, and the rest 5 are alternatives that you can add according to your preference.

5. Writing Consistently

Never stop publishing your stories.

Some writers write for 30 or 90 days and when they don’t see any results they stop publishing their stories. This is what you should avoid doing.

Getting followers and building an audience takes time.

I consistently get followers and views because I publish a lot. I mean a lot. I publish at least once a day. And that might seem too much for you. But for me? It’s the bare minimum.

I want to write at least 2–3 stories a day but I feel like when I publish more than one story a day — my stories lack value. Why? Because writing good Medium stories takes a lot of effort.
