Here are the five simple, and hopefully, not surprising reasons why you might have less than 1000 followers on Medium, and how to fix them as quickly as possible:
1. Inconsistency
The first reason is you’re not consistent enough to show your work on Medium and that’s the reason people aren’t noticing your work.
For you to get your first 1000 followers, you must show up consistently. And to do it, you can either follow a writing or publishing schedule and don’t miss the timeline. The second way of doing this is to show up daily. Some days put in small effort, some days a little, and other days do heavy work.

2. Garbage In, Garbage Out
The second reason why you have less than 1000 followers is all you’re doing is creating “Crap,” Which no one likes to read.
The content you create is probably the biggest factor for you that helps you get followers. The better the content, the more followers you’ll get.
This means, if you’re writing bad content and it’s not helpful, and it’s not valuable, and it’s not informative, and it’s not entertaining, you’ll go nowhere.
So go back to your content and ask “Are my stories helpful, valuable, or informative?” If the answer is “NO” Fix your content and write better content, and hopefully, you’ll start getting followers.

3. No Network Effect
Even if you’re doing the above two things perfectly, this might be one of the reasons why you may have less than 1000 followers on Medium.
See, if you have less than 1000 followers, you must spend time engaging, interacting, and building connections and trust with other writers as well as with your audience.
All accounts below 1,000 followers must spend their time reading, clapping, commenting, and sharing other writers’ work on Medium.
The Network Effect is so powerful. It works on compounding and gets you more reach, more views, and more followers, the more you work on it.

4. Goal Over Process
The another reason you may have less than 1000 followers is because you’re too focused on the goal of reaching the milestone and not noticing the process of getting there.
What I mean by this is that you’re consistently checking the notifications, the followers number, and your stats page, and completely forgetting about the process of writing, networking, and enjoying the journey.
See, the 1,000 followers mark isn’t the work in itself, it’s the by-product of your work. The harder you work to get there by writing and creating great quality stories, and selflessly engaging with your peers, the sooner you’ll get there.

5. Everything Is Okay, Just Keep Going
This is a kind of reminder for you.
Understand, achieving a 1,000 followers milestone, isn’t going to happen overnight. It takes time, and sometimes, takes more time than you think it does. Some people get there in a just few days, some people get there in a few months, while for some people it takes a year or so to get their first 1,000 followers.
But eventually, everyone gets there.
For instance, it took me around 75 days to get my first 1,000 followers, I also know people who have gotten there in just 30 days, and I also know people who got there in a year or so. Therefore, it’s all the same destination for everyone but reached at different timeframes.
So you need to understand that it takes time to get there, even if you’re doing everything right. So be patient and keep doing the work you’re doing and you’ll definitely get there sooner or later, that’s my promise to you.
