Of course, you can grow on Medium by following 2,300 people, even if you only have 100 followers. A lot of writers do this to get followers. They follow a bunch of people expecting they’d get a follow-back from them.
Although, it works. But guess what? It doesn’t work at scale. I mean in the long term. This is a cheap way to build an audience. Avoid it.
In order for you to grow and make money on Medium, you need to understand the fundamentals. And I can bet you probably don’t know them or neglect them unintentionally, right?
Here are the 5 mistakes you might be making that are holding you back from growing and making money on Medium:
1. You’re Creating Crappy Content
You write your Medium stories like a cricketer plays football.
Not only me, but even God also CAN NOT help you grow on Medium if you suck at creating content. Content is king, it drives people to follow you. It’s all that matters.
Your stories aren’t getting views because:
- Your headline sucks
- You don’t know how to start a story
- You don’t know how to format your stories
- You don’t know how to hook your readers
- You don’t know how to use slippery slide writing
Overall, your content is full of crap.
Want to grow on Medium? Write great stories.
2. You’re Commenting 100 Times A Day
If you’re doing this, please stop it ASAP.
Just think about it for a second. You comment 100 times a day, you get 50 back, and your stories get engagement. But for how long? Because the moment you stop doing it — you’ll go nowhere.
The people you engage with don’t even like your stories. They do it just because you comment on their stories and vice versa.
Instead of wasting your time and energy on commenting, create valuable and more interesting stories. And you can only do this by spending more time writing the story.
Engage with your readers when you get some free time; this will build trust with your readers.
Now I’m not saying you should completely stop commenting. Nope, that’s not what I’m saying. You should engage but only with the people you care about or when you find interesting stories.
This has worked for me and will work for you as well.
3. You’re Writing About 12 Different Topics
I never prefer doing this.
Especially on Medium. It’s not your personal blog where you can write anything you want to write. Medium has a different taste. The thing you might like creating — might not be the interesting thing for your readers.
And that’s the big problem with any Algorithm-Based platform. Some day your story gets thousands of likes, someday you sit like a caveman with 7 claps.
To avoid this trap write for one person. Find one or two topics that you enjoy creating content on and only write about those topics.
Trust me — you’ll have way better engagement and growth.
4. You Don’t Understand The Medium’s Algorithm
How can you possibly grow on Medium if you don’t even know how Medium’s algorithm works?
It took me almost 12 months to understand Medium’s algorithm and trust me it punched in my gut when I fully understood it.
Because I used to think the same way you’re thinking right now. But it was completely opposite. You don’t need to please the Medium algorithm to grow on Medium. But instead, you need to please the Medium’s readers.
Because the algorithm depends on people’s actions.
So if you can understand the relationship between both (people and Medium’s algorithm) I’d say you’ve done the 80% job for growing and making money on Medium.
It’s worth it to understand the Medium algorithm.
5. You’re Waiting For The Medium Partner Program
This is the sole reason you’re not making money on Medium.
Now here are 2 scenarios:
First: You already have joined the Medium Partner Program and making pennies from it. But your 60 cents don’t even help you buy a nice cup of coffee.
Second: You’ve been waiting for the Medium Partner Program for so long. I mean for years. But it hasn’t come yet in your country. And you’re still waiting and thinking “Once I join the Medium Partner Program I’ll start making money, woh.”
But you know what? You’re lazy as f*ck.
You don’t deserve any money. Why are you relying on the Medium Partner Program to earn money? Why don’t you just build other income streams?
Build your audience in the right way.
Create ebooks. Build courses. Start consulting. Do affiliate marketing. Start a newsletter. Get sponsorship.
Build your own income streams, don’t rely on MPP.
